Statistical Process Control For Business

What is the SPC for Business about?

Statistical Process Control was created by Dr Walter Shewhart in the 1920/30s and was used in American manufacturing industry before the Second World War. After the war, the Americans apparently forgot the technique but it was picked up by the Japanese, stimulated by the contributions of Dr W. Edwards Deming and others, and was a major factor in enabling Japanese producers to make products that were world-beating in both quality and reliability.

More recently, encouraged again by the Deming movement, people have realised that SPC Charts, also known as Control Charts or, even more preferably as Process Behaviour Charts, have been shown to be incredibly powerful devices for the improvement of all processes - in manufacturing, in services and in management. Wherever there is data the use of the Process Behaviour Chart will bring a completely new perspective to its understanding and interpretation and as a guide to action and improvement.

Our Approach

At PRISM, we are committed to the introduction of SPC Process Behaviour Charts into all our client training and consultation. We know, not only what powerful devices they can be for driving improvement, but also that they are a catalyst for change and transformation in management and leadership style. In particular, in the PRISM Improvement Experience training workshop the Process Behaviour Chart is introduced and the delegates experience how powerful it is in stimulating and measuring improvement.

PRISM also provides more advance training and consultancy in SPC methods and also in the sourcing and training in the simple but effective WinChart software for the construction of these charts.
